Living Between the Sun and the Moon

Modern life asks us to move like the sun.

Wake up at the same time. Work the same hours. Produce the same results. Repeat tomorrow.

It is a rhythm of consistency, structure, and outward achievement. There is nothing inherently wrong with that. In fact, the sun has much to teach us. It rises faithfully each morning, illuminating the world without asking whether it feels inspired.

Yet if you've ever wondered why some days you feel unstoppable while other days your energy seems to disappear for no apparent reason, perhaps the answer isn't that something is wrong with you.

Perhaps you're trying to live as though you're only made of sunlight.

☀️ The Solar Rhythm

The masculine has long been symbolically associated with the sun.

Not because men are incapable of change, but because the sun follows a remarkably consistent pattern. Likewise, many men's hormonal rhythms are primarily governed by a daily cycle, with testosterone often reaching its highest levels in the morning before gradually declining throughout the day.

This doesn't determine anyone's destiny, but it offers an interesting perspective.

The solar rhythm teaches:

- 🌅 Begin with intention.
- 🔥 Build while your energy is strongest.
- 🌇 Complete what you can before rest.
- 🌙 Recover so tomorrow can begin again.

Our workplaces were largely designed around this kind of rhythm—a predictable cycle repeated day after day.

🌙 The Lunar Rhythm

The feminine has long been symbolically associated with the moon.

Unlike the sun, the moon is never exactly the same from one night to the next. It waxes, wanes, disappears, and returns. Likewise, many women experience meaningful hormonal changes across the course of a menstrual cycle, often accompanied by shifts in energy, focus, and mood.

Rather than seeing those shifts as inconsistency, ancient traditions often viewed them as different seasons of wisdom.

There are times to create.

There are times to connect.

There are times to refine.

And there are times to rest.

Nature never apologizes for moving through its seasons. We are often the only ones who believe we should remain in perpetual summer.

🌍 The World We Built

Much of modern society—particularly in the United States—rewards a constant output. I follow many expats (short for expatriates—people who have relocated to another country) on social media, and one sentiment I hear repeatedly is, "The United States is for working; outside the United States is for living." Having traveled to several countries myself, I can understand why so many people feel that way. In many places, life seems to move at a different pace. There is still work to be done, but there also appears to be a greater reverence for presence, relationships, rest, and simply experiencing life. It raises an important question: Have we become so focused on making a living that we've forgotten how to live?

When —

Productivity is praised

Busyness becomes a badge of honor

Rest is often mistaken for laziness

The question becomes:

What happens when people are expected to produce like machines while their bodies continue to function like nature?

The answer isn't to reject work.

The answer is to understand your rhythms within it.

🌱 Working With the Cycle Instead of Against It

Most of us can't tell our employer, "I'll take this week off because I'm in my inner winter."

Life doesn't work that way.

But awareness changes everything.

If you're a man, notice your own solar rhythm.

Can you schedule your most demanding tasks during the hours when you naturally think most clearly?

Can meetings happen later while your mornings are protected for focused work?

If you're a woman, begin noticing your monthly patterns.

Which weeks feel naturally creative?

When do conversations flow more easily?

When does your body ask for gentleness instead of another cup of coffee?

You may not control your work schedule, but you can often control what you place within it.

Instead of asking,

"Why can't I perform exactly the same every day?"

you begin asking,

"How can I work with the energy I have today?"

That question alone changes everything.

☯️ The Goal Isn't Division

It's tempting to think this conversation is about men versus women.

It isn't.

Every one of us carries both solar and lunar qualities.

There are moments that require discipline.

There are moments that require surrender.

There are days for building.

There are days for listening.

There are seasons for climbing the mountain.

There are seasons for sitting quietly and watching the sunrise.

The healthiest life isn't one that worships the sun or the moon.

It learns from both.

🌅 Final Reflection

Perhaps thriving isn't about escaping the modern world.

Perhaps it's about remembering that beneath every calendar, every deadline, and every time clock, you are still part of something older.

The sun still rises.

The moon still changes.

The tides still move.

The seasons still turn.

And somewhere beneath the expectations of the world, your own rhythm is waiting to be remembered.
